Erythroblastosis foetalis occurs when an Rh-negative mother is sensitized to Rh-positive fetal red blood cells, usually during delivery, and subsequently produces anti-Rh antibodies. These IgG antibodies can cross the placenta in a subsequent Rh-positive pregnancy and destroy fetal RBCs.
