A document has 1 year retention policy with it on the basis of effective date(1 Apr 2009), what happens when the effective date is changed to current date ?

When the effective date changes but the retention policy was already set based on the original date, the disposal date remains anchored to the original effective date. The system honors the initial retention calculation and disposes on 1 Apr 2010 regardless of the effective date change. Retention policies are evaluated once at policy attachment, not recalculated on every attribute change.
When a retention policy calculates a disposal date from an effective date, that disposal date is typically fixed/computed at the time the policy is applied and stored on the object rather than being dynamically recalculated. So changing the effective date later only updates that field's display value — it does not retroactively push out the already-computed disposal date of 1 Apr 2010. This is why the system doesn't block the edit (option 2) or silently remove retention (option 4) or recompute a fresh one-year window from today (option 3).
