Eutrophication causes excessive algal growth. When these algae die and decompose, bacteria consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen. This oxygen depletion creates hypoxic conditions that suffocate fish, causing large-scale fish kills. While algae blooms and bacterial increases are part of the process, the direct killer is oxygen depletion.
