The Pillars of Hercules are the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar - the Rock of Gibraltar in Europe and Mount Hacho in Africa. In Greek mythology, they were created by Hercules during his tenth labor, and marked the western limit of the known world.
