The name 'India' is derived from the River Indus (Sindhu in Sanskrit). The ancient Persians called it 'Hindu' and Greeks called it 'Indus'. The Indus Valley Civilization was named after this river. India has no connection to the Cauvery or Punjab rivers in its naming.
