Margao is historically known as the 'Athens of Goa' due to its cultural and intellectual prominence during Portuguese colonial rule. It was a center for education, literature, and arts, much like Athens was in ancient Greece. The city hosted many prominent Goan writers, artists, and intellectuals. Panjim is the capital, Mapusa is a commercial town, and Vasco is a port city - none are called the Athens of Goa.
