In baseball, the defensive team always possesses the ball (the pitcher has it when pitching, fielders when the ball is in play). The offensive team can score without touching the ball by walking (when hit by a pitch or after four balls) or through errors by the defensive team. In football and volleyball, the offensive team must touch the ball to advance or score.
