Archimedes discovered the principle of buoyancy (now called Archimedes' Principle) while trying to determine if a crown was pure gold without damaging it. He realized that a crown would displace water equal to its volume, and a gold crown would displace differently than one mixed with silver. This became known as the 'Eureka' moment in the bath.
