Bartolomeo Cristofori invented the piano (originally called the gravicembalo col piano e forte, meaning 'harpsichord with soft and loud') around 1700 in Florence, Italy. His breakthrough was the hammer mechanism that struck strings instead of plucking them, allowing players to control volume through touch - impossible on harpsichords. This enabled dynamic expression in keyboard music.
