ADJUNCT means something added to another thing but not essential to it - an auxiliary or subordinate attachment. It describes something connected in a secondary or supplementary position.

A bellwether is a sheep that leads the flock, traditionally wearing a bell. By extension, it means something that indicates trends or serves as a leader. The other options are incorrect: raillery means good-humored teasing, noisome means offensive-smelling, and hidebound means inflexible or reactionary.
