Ramanathan Krishnan reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 1960 and 1961, making him the first Indian to achieve this feat. His son Ramesh Krishnan also later reached semifinals, but Ramanathan was first.

India won its first Olympic gold medal in hockey at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, beginning a dominant era where India won six consecutive Olympic hockey gold medals through 1956.

The first Asian Games held in Delhi were in 1951 (Asian Games I). Delhi later hosted again in 1982 (Asian Games IX), but 1951 was the inaugural edition in India.

Khashaba Dadasaheb Yadav (K.D. Yadav) won India's first individual Olympic medal - a bronze in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Milkha Singh and P.T. Usha were legendary runners who finished 4th in their Olympic finals but did not medal. Karnam Malleshwari became the first Indian woman to win an individual Olympic medal (bronze in weightlifting) in 2000, much later than Yadav.

Wilson Jones was the first Indian to win the World Amateur Billiards title in 1964. He was a pioneering billiards player who put India on the world billiards map. Geet Sethi, Michael Ferreira, and Manoj Kothari were later Indian billiards champions who won world titles in the 1980s and 1990s.

India reached the Davis Cup final for the first time in 1966, led by the legendary Ramanathan Krishnan and the Amritraj brothers. They lost to Australia in the final. This remains India's best-ever performance in the Davis Cup team tennis tournament.

Viswanathan Anand was the first Indian chess player to achieve the Grandmaster norm in 1987 at age 18. He later became India's first Grandmaster and World Champion. Dibyendu Barua was the second Indian GM (1991). Praveen M.Thipsay was another early Indian GM. Nassir Wajih was a chess player but not the first to get the GM norm.

The Dronacharya Award is India's highest sporting honor conferred specifically on outstanding coaches for their contributions to sports development. It is not awarded to athletes (who receive Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna), umpires, or sports journalists.
