En passant is a special pawn capture in chess. When a pawn moves two squares from its starting position and lands beside an enemy pawn, that enemy pawn can capture it as if it had moved only one square. The capture must be done immediately on the next move, and the pawn is removed from the square it passed through (which is now empty).
