Newcastle United's nickname is The Magpies, taken from the black-and-white magpie bird that matches their striped kit. Everton are the Toffees, Bolton the Trotters, and Hull City the Tigers, so none of those fit.

Chelsea's traditional nickname is The Pensioners, from their historical link to the nearby Royal Hospital Chelsea and its Chelsea Pensioners. Though fans today more often say The Blues, The Pensioners remains a valid and recognised nickname.

Everton's nickname is The Toffees, originating from the Everton toffee shops near their Anfield roots. The Citizens (Man City), the Lions (Aston Villa) and the Baggies (West Brom) belong to other clubs.

Aston Villa are known as The Lions, reflected in their crest. The Whites (Leeds), the Tigers (Hull) and 'the Whitelillies' are not nicknames for Villa.

The Reds is the nickname most associated with Liverpool FC, owing to their all-red home colours. Manchester United are commonly the Red Devils, while Arsenal and West Brom have different primary nicknames.

The Baggies is the nickname of West Bromwich Albion. The name's exact origin is debated but is firmly associated with West Brom, not with Wigan, Tottenham or Bolton.

Besides Spurs, Tottenham Hotspur are also known as the Lillywhites because of their distinctive all-white home kits. The Trotters refers to Bolton, the Latics to Wigan, and 'the Whites' is too generic to be their specific alternate name.

Wigan Athletic are called The Latics, a contraction of Ath-letic. The other options belong to different clubs: the Throstles (West Brom), the Toon (Newcastle) and the School of Science (Everton).

Pompey is the long-standing nickname of Portsmouth FC, derived from the city's naval and historical association with the name Pompey. Charlton, Burnley and Sheffield United are unrelated to this nickname.

Reading FC is nicknamed The Royals because Reading is located in the Royal County of Berkshire. The other colour-based names (blue and white, red devils) belong to different clubs. 'The royals' is the accepted moniker for Reading.
