Linux is technically a kernel, the core component that manages hardware resources. A complete operating system requires additional software around the kernel, which is why it's more accurate to call Linux-based systems 'GNU/Linux' rather than just 'Linux' or 'Operating System'.

Apache HTTP Server is the most widely used open-source web server software, freely available for anyone to use and modify. WebSphere is IBM's proprietary commercial web server, IIS is Microsoft's proprietary server, and Sun Java System Web Server (now Oracle) is also closed-source.

Chromium is the open-source browser project that serves as the foundation for Google Chrome. Chrome adds proprietary features like built-in Flash (historically) and auto-update mechanisms, while Chromium remains the fully open-source base that other browsers can also build upon.

7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver with high compression ratios. WinZip and WinRAR are proprietary commercial software that require payment for full functionality. TCS and many enterprises prefer 7-Zip because it's free, secure, and has no licensing costs.

WANem (Wide Area Network Emulator) is an open-source tool developed by TCS to simulate network conditions like latency, packet loss, and bandwidth constraints. It was created by TCS's innovation labs and won the FOSS India Award 2008, making it their contribution to the open-source community.

TCS has established technology alliances with both Red Hat (Linux and enterprise open-source solutions) and Ingres (database systems). These alliances enable TCS to deliver integrated enterprise solutions using open-source technologies to their clients.
