Robocon started in 2002. The Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) began in 2002 as an annual robotics competition for university and college students in the Asia-Pacific region.

The first Robocon India took place at IIT Kanpur. India hosted the ABU Robocon competition for the first time in 2002, with the event held at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

NIT Ahmadabad has won the Robocon India title three times. This makes them the most successful team in the competition's history at the time of the question. Other institutes like IITs and VIT have also participated but have not achieved this three-time victory.

Robocon India is jointly organized by Doordarshan (the public service broadcaster) and MIT Pune. Doordarshan provides the telecast and organizational support, while MIT Pune handles the technical coordination.
