Sea level rise caused by thermal expansion of seawater and melting ice sheets and glaciers is one of the most widely discussed impacts of climate change, threatening coastal communities and ecosystems worldwide.

Warmer climate causes sea level rise through two main mechanisms: thermal expansion (water occupies more volume when heated) and addition of water from melting glaciers and ice sheets. Both processes are actively occurring and contribute significantly to observed sea level increase.
