Design has been described as 'the mapping of function onto form' because it involves determining how a product will perform its intended function (function) while specifying its physical structure and appearance (form). This foundational concept connects what a product does with how it looks and works. Distribution and field service are later stages in the product lifecycle.

Hierarchical planning involves creating plans at multiple levels of abstraction, with each level representing more detail than the one above it. Successive representations allow for broad goals at higher levels and specific actions at lower levels. Non-hierarchical planning lacks this multi-level structure.

Alan Turing originally called his test for machine intelligence the 'imitation game' in his 1950 paper. Alain Colmerauer led the team that developed PROLOG at the University of Marseilles in 1972. PROLOG uses predicate calculus for symbolic logic and reasoning, making it fundamental to AI programming. Nicklaus Wirth created Pascal, Seymour Papert developed LOGO, and John McCarthy invented LISP.

Continuous-path control allows a robot to learn a trajectory by being manually guided through the desired path by a human operator. This is different from pick-and-place which moves between discrete points, contact sensing which uses force feedback, or robot vision which uses visual guidance.

To invoke a LISP system, you enter either 'LISP' for standard LISP implementations or 'CL' specifically for Common Lisp environments. Both commands are valid entry points to start programming in the LISP language family.

XCON (also called R1) was DEC's pioneering expert system for configuring computer systems, first deployed in 1980. It was one of the earliest commercial expert systems and demonstrated the practical value of AI in industrial settings. PDP-11 and VAX were DEC computer lines, not expert systems.

Before time sharing was developed in the 1960s, batch processing was the dominant method where jobs were submitted on punched cards or tape and processed sequentially without interactive user access. Time sharing enabled multiple users to interact with the computer simultaneously.

Pierre Cardin was a famous Italian-born French fashion designer known for his avant-garde style and space-age designs. He founded his fashion house in 1950 and was the first couturier to design for both men and women simultaneously. Cardin is particularly famous for his futuristic designs and for licensing his name to hundreds of products worldwide, making him one of the most commercially successful fashion designers.
