The first champions league final (after the European Cup was rebranded as Champions League) was marred with controvery. Allegations of match fixing were levelled against the winning club. This involved a league game (of their country) , it emerged, had fixed their title-clinching last game against US Valenciennes so they could concentrate on the Champions League final tie. This resulted in them being stripped of their league title (although not the Champions League, as the match in question was not in that competition). They were also forcibly relegated to the second tier in the league, and banned from defending their European title in the 1993–94 season. It hosted a Champions league final which involved German club Bayer Leverkusen pitted against Real Madrid of Spain. It was a close match which eventually Real Madrid won 2-1. But it will always be remembered for one of the most beautiful goals scored in UEFA Champions League history ; Zinedine Zidane received a high, arcing cross from Roberto Carlos on the edge of the penalty area, Swivelling on his right foot he unleashed an unstoppable volley with his left-foot into the top corner.
