IUCN is the 'International Union of Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources', which is not called as 'World Conservation Union' (WCU). It maintains a 'Red Data Book' Or 'Red List', which is a catalog of taxa facing the risk of extinction. The purpose of preparing the 'Red List' is to provide awareness to the degree of threat to biodiversity, provide global index about already declined biodiversity. Identification of species at greater risk of extinctions and preparing conservation priorities and help in conservation. 

The species (including animals, plants, fungi, etc.) which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future are known as threatened species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the authority on threatened species, and it treats threatened species as a group of three categories, depending on the degree relative to which they are threatened. Those categories are Vulnerable species; Endangered species and Critically endangered species. As per the Red list of 2000, there are 11,096 threatened species.

Red list is the world's most detailed inventory of the global conservation status of biological species. The Red list has divided species into categories based on their condition. A total of 8 categories are identified such as extinct, endangered, etc.

The list classifies threatened species under nine categories. The categories include extinct, extinct in the wild, endangered species, etc.

In India, red list of plant species is prepared by Botanical Survey of India. Botanical Survey of India is Government of India Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's organization for the survey, research, and conservation of plant resources, flora and endangered species of India. It was founded on 13 February 1890, by the East India Company. The headquarters are located in DF Block, Sector I, Salt Lake City, Kolkata.

According to red list in the world, 11046 species; out of which 5,485 are animals and 5611 are plants, which are listed as threatened on the 2000 red list. Of these 1939 are listed as critically endangered. In India, 44 plant species are considered as critically endangered, 113 are endangered and 87 vulnerable. Amongst animals, 18 are critically endangered, 54 endangered and 143 vulnerable.

The IUCN 'Red List of Threatened Species' is also known as the IUCN Red List or 'Red Data List'.
