Port that is located on the cross roads of east and west is Cochin port. It is the largest shipyard in India located in the state of Kerala. It falls under public sector undertaking organisation it was founded in the year 1972. Services offered are ship building, ship repair and design.

• Landlocked harbour means the navigable route to sea is by a channel cut by the rock. It's a harbour that is almost surrounded by land and has just a little entry for the vessels to pass through the channel and enter the sea.
  
• Vishakhapatnam harbour is located in Andhra Pradesh is an example of the landlocked harbour. It is the second largest port by volume of cargo handled. It is the only port of Andhra Pradesh.
  

It is the second largest port in terms of volume of traffic handled and is the oldest artificial harbour on the east coast of India. It handles petroleum products, crude oil, fertilisers, iron ore and dry cargo.

India has 12 major ports and 181 medium and minor ports. Major ports are maintained by shipping ministry of central government. Minor ports are maintained by relevant respective state ministries of 9 coastal states of India.

Paradip port is an artificial deepwater port of the east coast. It is located in the district of Jagatsinghapur in Odisha.  It was started in the year 1996 by the Government of India. 

 They are most suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods. 

India’s trade with foreign countries is carried from the ports located along the coast. With a long coastline of 7,516.6 km, India is dotted with 12 major and 181 medium and minor ports. These major ports handle 95 per cent of India’s foreign trade.
