1.  India has an extensive network of inland waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters and creeks.
2.  The total navigable length is 14,500 km (9,000 mi), out of which about 5,200 km (3,200 mi) of river and 4,000 km (2,500 mi) of canal can be used by mechanized crafts.

Cochin port is located on the Willington island on the South-West coast of India located on the crossroads of the East-West Ocean trade. The port is called the natural gateway to the vast industrial and agricultural produce markets of southwest India.

Chennai port is the second largest port in India in terms of cargo volume, after Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). It handles a significant portion of India's sea-borne trade, particularly containers and automotive cargo. Visakhapatnam, Cochin, and Kolkata are major ports but handle less total trade volume than Chennai.

Mumbai Port is the largest port in India and handles bulk cargo traffic with its four jetties for handling Liquid chemicals, Crude and petroleum products. International container traffic of Mumbai Port is directed to the new and big Nhava Sheva port.

Kandla, also known as the Kandla Port Trust or Maharao Khengarji Port Trust is a seaport in Kutch District of Gujarat state in western India, near the city of Gandhidham. Located on the Gulf of Kutch, it is one of major ports on west coast. Kandla was constructed in the 1950s as the chief seaport serving western India, after the partition of India and Pakistan left the port of Karachi in Pakistan

Kochi Called the "Queen of the Arabian Sea", Kochi was an important spice trading centre on the west coast of India from the 14th century onward, and maintained a trade network with Arab merchants from the pre-Islamic era. Occupied by the Portuguese in 1503, Kochi was the first of the European colonies in colonial India.

Mumbai is located on the west coast of India and is the first major Indian port that ships from Europe encounter when sailing eastward across the Arabian Sea. Historically, European ships would reach Mumbai before other east coast ports like Kolkata, Chennai (Madras), or Cochin. This geographical position made Mumbai a crucial entry point for colonial trade.

There are six major ports located at west coast of India i.e. Kandla Port (Gujarat), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Navasheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), Murmagoa, New Mangalore (Karnataka), and Kochi (Kerala).

There are seven major ports located on the east coast of India i.e. Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Ennore (Tamil Nadu), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Paradip (Odisha), Haldia & Kolkata (West Bengal), and Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Island).
