Kandla in Kuchchh was the first port developed soon after Independence to ease the volume of trade on the Mumbai port, in the wake of loss of Karachi port to Pakistan after the Partition. Kandla is a tidal port. 

Tuticorin is a port in Tamil Nadu situated on the east coast of India. This port has a natural harbour and rich hinterland. Thus, it has a flourishing trade handling of a large variety of cargoes to even our neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Maldives, etc.

Haldia port or Calcutta Port is a major seaport has been built at the meeting place of the Haldi River and Hooghly river in the state of West Bengal. The port's main imports are petroleum, chemicals, and parts. Exports include coal, iron ore, and steel. Port of Kolkata is also a base of the Indian Coast Guard.

Water transpots consisits of all of these. India has an extensive network of water ways in the forms of rivers, canals, backwaters, creeks and long coastline accessible through the sea and the oceans.

Paradip Port is natural, deep-water port on the East coast of India in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. It is situated at confluence of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal.

There are total 13 major sea ports of India,out of 12 are government and one, Ennore port of Chennai is the corporate one. Ennore Port is one of the major port of India located at Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu state along with Kakinada Port and private Krishnapatnam Port and Mundra Port. Mumbai Port is a port which lies midway on the West coast of India and in the state of Maharashtra

Mumbai is one of the biggest ports of India including three major docks. The three major docks include:

Prince's Dock

Victoria Dock

Indira Dock.

Haldia port  or Haldia Dock Complex has been built at the meeting place of the Haldi River and Hooghly river in Kolkata. Kolkata Port Trust has been created in this port as the port's partner. So it is not a port. It is an official dock complex.

 It is situated at 22°02′N 88°06′E around 60 kilometers (37 mi) away from the pilotage station.

The port consists of:

1. Impounded dock; system with 12 berths
2. 3 oil jetties in the river
3. 3 barge jetties in the river for handling oil carried by barges
4. Haldia anchorage for lash vessels

The docks are impounded dock systems with locks from the river.

 The port's main imports are petroleum, chemicals, and parts. Exports include coal, iron ore, and steel.

1.  India has an extensive network of inland waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters and creeks.
2.  The total navigable length is 14,500 km (9,000 mi), out of which about 5,200 km (3,200 mi) of river and 4,000 km (2,500 mi) of canal can be used by mechanized crafts.
3.  About 44 million tonnes (49,000,000 short tons) of cargo are moved annually through these waterways using mechanized vessels and country boats. 
4.  Inland waterways consist of the Ganges-Bhagirathi-Hooghly rivers, the Brahmaputra, the Barak river, the rivers in Goa, the backwaters in Kerala, inland waters in Mumbai and the deltaic regions of the Godavari-Krishna rivers.

The Deepset landlocked port in India is Vishakhapatnam,AP. The port which is encircled by land from all sides with a water passage towards sea or ocean is termed as land-locked port.
