World Facts and Geography

The Ottoman Empire (1299-1922) was centered in Anatolia, with its capital Constantinople (now Istanbul) located in modern-day Turkey. At its peak, it spanned three continents, but Turkey formed its heartland and the base of Ottoman power for over six centuries.

Easter Island is a Chilean territory in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Chile annexed the island in 1888 and it remains part of Chile today. Argentina, France, and Brazil have no territorial claim to Easter Island.

The Netherlands is world-famous for its tulips, with the Dutch tulip industry dating back to the 17th century 'tulip mania'. Belgium and Switzerland are European countries but not associated with tulips. Cuba is in the Caribbean and has no connection to tulips.

The Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa is famous for its San people, commonly called Bushmen. The Sahara is in North Africa, the Gobi is in Mongolia/China, and the Australian desert refers to Australia's interior deserts - none are traditionally associated with Bushmen.

The Netherlands' tricolour (red, white, blue) is considered the oldest existing tricolor flag, dating back to the 16th century when it was used by Dutch rebels during their fight for independence from Spain. France's tricolour was adopted after the French Revolution in 1789, making it much younger. Germany and Italy adopted their tricolors in the 19th century.

The Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) is a cryptid said to inhabit Loch Ness, a large freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands. Loch Ness is located in Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom. Ireland, Wales, and England have their own distinct folklore and legendary creatures.

The Ryukyu Islands form an archipelago stretching southwest from Japan's Kyushu Island toward Taiwan. They are administratively part of Japan and include Okinawa. The chain is not part of Korea, Myanmar, or Indonesia, which are separate countries entirely.

The Kirghiz Steppe is an extensive grassland region located primarily in northern Kazakhstan, extending into southern Russia. It is not in Kyrgyzstan (whose name is related but different), Uzbekistan, or Afghanistan. Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country and contains vast steppe regions.

Peru is located to the northwest of Chile, sharing a border. Argentina is northeast/east of Chile, Brazil is far to the northeast, and Ecuador is to Chile's northwest but is separated by Peru and Colombia. The Chile-Peru border runs from the Pacific Ocean eastward through the Andes Mountains.

Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations in 2009 following a military coup and abrogation of the constitution. The suspension lasted until 2014 when Fiji returned to democracy. Malta, Kenya, and Ghana are current Commonwealth members in good standing and have not been suspended.

The Taliban has historically threatened and disrupted elections in Afghanistan, particularly targeting the democratic process established after the 2001 intervention. Pakistan, Iran, and Israel are not countries where the Taliban has been a significant threat to electoral processes.
