Quito, Ecuador's capital, is located at approximately 0°15' south latitude - just about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the Equator. This makes it the closest national capital to the Equator. Other options: Djakarta (Jakarta, Indonesia) is ~6°S. Brasilia (Brazil) is ~15°S. Kinshasa (DR Congo, misspelled here) is ~4°S. Cairo (Egypt) is ~30°N. Manila (Philippines) is ~14°N. None are as close to 0° as Quito.

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, remains the world's last divided capital city, split between the Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north since 1974, similar to how Berlin was divided during the Cold War.

New Zealand was historically called 'The Britain of the South' due to its British colonial heritage and similar climate. Wellington is the national capital of New Zealand.
