Water Conservation and Management

The saturated zone is the area underground where all pores and fractures are completely filled with water. This water-bearing formation is known as an aquifer.

Groundwater is defined as water located beneath the Earth's surface in the spaces between soil particles and rock fractures.

A reservoir is a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply. Humans build dams to create these for storage.

Permeable materials have interconnected pores or cracks that allow water to flow through them easily. Impermeable materials block the flow of water.

A water shortage occurs when the demand for water resources exceeds the available supply in a specific area.

To extract groundwater, a well must be drilled deep enough to reach the saturated zone, which is the aquifer.

Wetlands act as natural filters by trapping sediments and absorbing pollutants from water as it flows through them, improving water quality.

The primary stages of the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection (or runoff/accumulation).

Wetlands act as natural sponges that soak up excess water during heavy rainfall. This process slows down water movement and reduces the peak flow of runoff, which helps prevent downstream flooding.

The Flint Water Crisis began in 2014 when the city switched its water source to the Flint River. The water was not properly treated for corrosion, causing lead to leach from old pipes into the drinking supply.

The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is the world's largest hydroelectric power station. It was built to provide renewable energy, reduce coal dependency, and improve flood control.

The Ogallala Aquifer is a vast underground water source in the central United States. It is being depleted much faster than it can be recharged, primarily due to intensive agricultural irrigation.

The water in an overhead tank has higher gravitational potential to compared to water which finally flows out of the taps in the houses. 
The water moves due to this decrease in gravitational potential energy of water by flowing out of taps, or, the water is supplied by the gravitational force acting on water.

Water scarcity is a multifaceted issue driven by population growth, industrial expansion, and intensive agricultural practices, all of which increase the demand for limited freshwater resources.

All these industries cause water pollution by the water discharged into the rivers. The common industrial pollutants are sulphur, asbestos, poisonous solvents, poly-chlorinated biphenyl, lead, mercury, volatile organic chemicals, etc.
