Abebe Bikila (spelled Bekele in the options) of Ethiopia won the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics while running barefoot. He became the first sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal.

Kamaljeet Sandhu (spelled here as Kamaljit Sidhu) won the gold medal at the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games in the 400 m race. She ran the distance in 57.3 seconds, becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Asian Games. The other options are Indian athletes from much later generations.

The Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. This was India's first Olympic gold medal as an independent nation or under the British Raj.
