Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural IPL season in 2008, captained by Shane Warne in a remarkable underdog story. They defeated Chennai Super Kings in the final. Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Mumbai Indians were strong contenders but didn't win until later seasons - Mumbai Indians won 5 times, but not in 2008.

Deccan Chargers (now defunct, replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad) won IPL 2009 under captain Gilchrist, turning around their last-place finish in 2008. The tournament was held in South Africa. Rod Marsh is a former Australian cricketer who played as a wicket-keeper. He represented the Australia cricket team (AUS) in Test cricket from 1970 to 1984. Marsh was part of the famous Australian team during the 1970s and formed a formidable bowling partnership with Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson.
