India's fertility rate is influenced by son preference due to religious and cultural factors, the need for children as old-age security in absence of social security systems, and the economic utility of children as labor in agricultural households. The intrinsic value of children is a more universal concept and not specifically cited as a key determinant in Indian demographic studies.
