Natural Vegetation and Habitats

Savannas are tropical grasslands with scattered trees where periodic fires are essential for maintaining the ecosystem's structure. These fires prevent the encroachment of dense forest trees and encourage the growth of fire-resistant grasses.

The distribution and characteristics of global vegetation are determined by a combination of latitude, climate, and soil properties. Latitude influences solar radiation, climate dictates temperature and moisture levels, and soil provides necessary nutrients and physical support.

Tropical rainforests are characterized by a highly stratified structure with multiple layers of trees. Because the dense upper canopy blocks most of the sunlight, very little light reaches the forest floor, resulting in sparse undergrowth.

Evergreen forests thrive in regions where there is no prolonged dry season, meaning rainfall is distributed adequately throughout the year. This continuous water availability allows trees to retain their leaves year-round, unlike deciduous forests which shed leaves during dry periods.

Broad leaf trees, such as those found in tropical rainforests, require abundant moisture and warmth, making them most common in hot and humid areas.

A savanna is a tropical grassland biome characterized by a continuous cover of grasses with scattered, widely spaced trees. It represents a transitional zone between tropical rainforests and deserts.

Individual trees in an evergreen forest do shed their leaves, but they do not do so all at the same time or in a single season. Consequently, the forest always retains its green canopy throughout the year.

Temperate grasslands receive moderate rainfall and have nutrient-rich soils, which support shorter but highly nutritious grasses. In contrast, tropical grasslands (savannas) have a prolonged dry season and nutrient-poor soils, resulting in taller, coarser, and less nutritious grasses.

Allogenic succession is driven by external environmental forces or disturbances, such as disease, floods, or climate change, rather than internal changes caused by the organisms themselves.

Chaparral is the characteristic Mediterranean shrubland biome found in Southern California, consisting of drought-resistant, evergreen shrubs. Fynbos is found in South Africa, muskeg in northern bogs, and campos in South American grasslands.

Tropical savannas experience highly seasonal rainfall, which limits continuous tree canopy growth and creates open grasslands with scattered trees. These trees have developed specialized adaptations, such as thick bark, to survive frequent seasonal wildfires.

Muskeg refers to a type of bog consisting of waterlogged soils and stunted black spruce trees, commonly found in the northern coniferous forest or taiga biome.

Podzol soils are highly acidic, nutrient-poor soils characteristic of coniferous (taiga) forests. Coniferous forests thrive in high-latitude regions with large annual temperature ranges (up to 38 degrees C) and moderate, uniform precipitation.

Cork oak trees have thick, fire-resistant bark adapted to hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which is characteristic of the Mediterranean climate region.

Saltbush is a highly salt-tolerant shrub with juicy leaves that serves as excellent fodder for sheep and cattle. It is widely distributed across the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia, most notably in the Nullarbor Plain.
