Indian Geography

Srinagar is recognized as the capital of Jammu & Kashmir in general knowledge contexts. While the region uniquely has two capitals (Srinagar for summer, Jammu for winter), Srinagar is commonly cited as the primary capital. The distractors are other locations: Shimla (HP capital), Manali (HP hill station), Darjeeling (West Bengal town).

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. This iconic white marble mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Chandigarh is indeed the shared capital of both Punjab and Haryana, while also being a Union Territory. This unique arrangement was established after Punjab was divided in 1966.

Pushkar, Rajasthan is home to one of the very few Brahma temples in the world. The Brahma Mandir in Pushkar dates to the 14th century and is a major pilgrimage site.

The Digboi Refinery in Assam, established in 1901 by the Assam Oil Company, is the oldest oil refinery in India. It was set up after oil was discovered in Digboi in the late 19th century, making it one of Asia's oldest refineries. Cochin, Mathura, and Guwahati are all locations of refineries, but they were established much later.

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand, serving as the administrative headquarters of the state since its formation in 2000.

Raipur has been the capital of Chhattisgarh since the state's formation in 2000, when it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh. Bilashpur, Durg, and Dantewada are all cities in Chhattisgarh but none serve as the state capital.

Imphal is the capital and largest city of Manipur, one of the seven northeastern states of India. Bishnupur, Chandel, and Thoubal are all districts in Manipur but none serve as the state capital.

Ranchi is the capital city of Jharkhand state, established when the state was carved out of Bihar in 2000. Hazaribag, Jamshedpur, and Dhanbad are major cities in Jharkhand but not the capital.

Kohima has been the capital of Nagaland since the state's creation in 1963. Dimapur, Wokha, and Peren are important districts or cities in Nagaland but serve no capital function.

Itanagar has been the capital of Arunachal Pradesh since the state became a union territory in 1972 and a full state in 1987. Changlang, Tawang, and Siang are districts or tourist destinations but not the capital.

Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, established in 1956 when the state was reorganized. Jabalpur and Indore are major cities in MP but not the capital. Ujjain is a historic pilgrimage center, not the administrative capital.

Lucknow has been the capital of Uttar Pradesh since the state was formed as the United Provinces in 1935 and continues as the capital after Uttar Pradesh was renamed in 1950. Kanpur is the largest city but not the capital. Allahabad (Prayagraj) is a judicial capital, and Meerut is a major commercial city.

Shimla has been the capital of Himachal Pradesh since the state came into existence in 1971. It was also the summer capital of British India. Manali and Kulu (Kullu) are popular tourist destinations but not capitals. Chamba is a historic town in HP.

Subhash Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, which is located in present-day Odisha (formerly known as Orissa). At the time of his birth, Cuttack was part of the Bengal Presidency under British rule.
