Fossils and Geological Eras

The Carboniferous period is famous for vast coal-forming swamps (3). Pre-cambrian rocks are the primary source of ancient metallic ores (5). The Pleistocene is the epoch of recent major glaciations (4). The Upper Cretaceous/Early Cenozoic marks the beginning of the tectonic movements leading to the Himalayas (1).

Groups that have their descendant groups removed from them are termed as paraphyletic. Dinosaurs are paraphyletic.
