A kick-off is the method of starting or restarting play at the beginning of the match, after a goal is scored, or at the start of each half. The ball is placed at the center spot and kicked by the team that conceded the goal.

A dropped ball is the restart method when play is temporarily stopped while the ball is in play, and the referee stops the game for reasons not covered by other laws. The referee drops the ball at the location where it was when play stopped.

When a player commits offenses like holding an opponent, spitting at someone, or deliberately handling the ball, the opposing team is awarded a free kick. Serious offenses may also result in yellow or red cards, but the immediate restart is a free kick.

In football, the goalkeeper cannot handle the ball for more than 6 seconds before releasing it. This rule prevents time-wasting and ensures the game continues flowing. If the goalkeeper exceeds this time, an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team from the position where the infringement occurred.

According to football laws, a goal cannot be scored directly from a direct free kick into your own goal. If this happens, play is restarted with a corner kick for the opposing team. This is similar to the rule for direct free kicks taken from within your own penalty area.

When a free kick is taken, all opposing players must be at least 10 yards (approximately 9.15 meters) away from the ball. This distance ensures the kicking team has space to play the ball without immediate interference. The referee often uses a spray to mark this distance in modern football.

When the ball completely crosses the touch line (sideline), whether on the ground or in the air, a throw-in is awarded to the team that did NOT touch the ball last. The opponent player who last touched the ball before it went out gives possession to the other team. This is the only restart method where players use their hands to put the ball back in play.
