Gary Speed (played 535), Gareth Barry (653+), and James Milner (634+) are other appearance leaders but James had the record at the time this question was written.

Malcolm McVean scored Liverpool's first ever league goal in their first league match against Middlesbrough on September 2, 1893, which Liverpool won 2-0. McVean was one of Liverpool's founding players and scored both goals in that historic match. This established the club's competitive league history and marked the beginning of Liverpool's journey in English football.
