Sanjay Dutt won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 2000 for his performance in 'Vaastav: The Reality'. Salman Khan has been nominated multiple times but has not won Best Actor at Filmfare. Dharmendra won awards earlier in his career. Vinod Khanna received critical acclaim but did not win Best Actor at Filmfare.

Anil Kapoor made his debut as a leading actor in the 1979 film 'Hamare Tumhare' produced by R. B. Productions. 'Pallavi Anu Pallavi' was actually Mani Ratnam's directorial debut (1983), 'Woh Saat Din' was Anil Kapoor's second film as lead (1983), and 'Chameli Ki Shadi' was a later film (1986). Anil Kapoor had previously appeared as a child artist in 'Tu Payal Mein Geet' (1963) but 'Hamare Tumhare' was his adult debut as hero.

India has failed to submit a film for the Oscar competition in 9 years: 1953, 1956, 1959, 1962-1969, 1974, 1976-1979, 1981-1982, 1984, 1986, 1990-1991, 2003. These were years when no film was officially sent to the Academy.

The Chess Players (Shatranj Ke Khilari, 1977) was Satyajit Ray's only non-Bengali film submission for India's Oscar entry. It was made in Hindi/English. All other Ray submissions (Pather Panchali, Devi, Apu Trilogy) were in Bengali.

Lagaan (2001), directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring Aamir Khan, was India's last official nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film until the category was renamed. It was nominated in 2002. Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Eklavya (2007) were later submissions but not nominated, and Parineeta (2005) was not an official submission.
