Computer Hardware Devices

A keyboard is an input device that sends data and commands TO the computer, unlike output devices which display or present information FROM the computer. Printers produce paper output, monitors display visual output, and modems both send and receive data. Keyboards, mice, and scanners are all purely input devices.

A modem serves as both an input and output device - it receives incoming data from networks (input) and transmits outgoing data (output) over communication lines. Scanners and mice are purely input devices, while monitors are purely output devices. Touchscreens and modems are examples of devices that handle both functions.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, which uses liquid crystals that change optical properties when voltage is applied. This technology is widely used in computer monitors, televisions, and digital displays because it's energy-efficient and produces sharp images.

Software consists of the instructions, programs, and data that tell the computer what to do and how to do it. Hardware (like mouse and printer) are physical components, while software is the code that controls them.

Primary memory stores data and instructions, cache memory speeds up access, and external memory is for long-term storage - none of these directly command the ALU.

A VDU (Visual Display Unit) is a peripheral device because it connects to and works with the computer system but exists outside the main computer case. While it is primarily an output device (displaying information) and contains hardware components, peripheral device is the most accurate classification as it describes its relationship to the computer system.
