Color Theory and Symbolism

Chromatics is the scientific study of colors, encompassing the physics of color, color perception, color measurement, and color theory. The term derives from the Greek word 'chroma' meaning color. Chromatics investigates how colors are produced, how they interact, how humans perceive them, and their applications in various fields like art, design, and physics.

Different colors of light correspond to different wavelengths and different frequencies. These two properties are inversely related through the equation c = λf (where c is the speed of light, λ is wavelength, and f is frequency). Red light has longer wavelength and lower frequency, while violet light has shorter wavelength and higher frequency. Therefore, both wavelength and frequency differ across different colors.

In the visible light spectrum, the primary colors are Red, Green, and Blue (RGB color model). Pink is not considered a primary color because it is not a pure spectral color - pink is actually a desaturated or lighter form of red, created when white light is added to red. Pink exists in our perception but not as a distinct wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum. Orange and Yellow, while secondary in some color models, are actual spectral colors.

In the traditional color models, primary colors are the basic colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors. In the RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) model used in art, and RGB (Red, Green, Blue) model used in light, Cyan is not a primary color - it's a secondary color formed by mixing blue and green (in light) or blue and yellow (in pigment). Therefore, Cyan does not come under primary colors in general color theory.

When mixing Red and Green colors in the additive RGB (Red-Green-Blue) color model used with light, you get Yellow. This is a fundamental principle of additive color mixing - red light and green light combine to produce yellow light. This is how TVs, computer monitors, and phone screens create yellow by illuminating red and green pixels together. In subtractive pigment mixing, red and green would not produce yellow.

Red and Yellow are primary colors in the traditional color wheel. When mixed together in subtractive color theory (like paints), they create Orange, which is a secondary color. This is a fundamental concept in basic color theory taught in elementary art education.

The Greek flag features a white cross on a blue background. The cross is in the upper left corner and occupies one quarter of the flag. The white cross represents Greek Orthodox Christianity, while the blue and white colors symbolize the sea and sky of Greece.

Despite its name, the purple finch is not actually purple. The adult male has a raspberry-red or crimson plumage on its head, breast, and back. Females are brown and streaked.

In the Twilight series, vampire Edward's eyes change color based on his thirst level. When hungry or thirsty, his eyes turn a dark red/crimson color rather than their usual golden/topaz tone that appears when he's well-fed.

Purple finches (Haemorhous purpureus) are actually raspberry-red to crimson colored, especially males. Despite their name, they don't display true purple - the designation refers to Latin purpureus meaning "purple" or "crimson."

Despite being called 'black boxes,' flight recorders are painted bright orange to make them easier to spot after crashes. The term 'black box' refers to their function, not their appearance. Green, black, and blue are not the actual colors used for visibility.

Red M&M's were withdrawn in 1976 due to health concerns about red dye No. 2 (amaranth), which was a suspected carcinogen. They were reintroduced in 1987 after Mars, Inc. reformulated using a different red dye. Orange, blue, and pink colors were never withdrawn in this manner.
