Ray Ozzie founded Groove Networks in 1997 and served as its CEO until Microsoft acquired the company in 2005. He then became a Chief Technical Officer at Microsoft, making Groove Networks his immediate employer before joining Microsoft.

InstallShield, the popular installation software for Windows, was founded in 1987 by Viresh Bhatia and Rick Harold. It became the de facto standard for software installation on Windows platforms throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

Dries Buytaert created Drupal in 2000 as a message board system, later releasing it as open-source CMS software. James Gosling created Java, Rasmus Lerdorf created PHP, and Craig R. McClanahan created the Struts framework. Dries continues to lead Drupal's development and co-founded Acquia, a company providing Drupal services.

Anthony J. Barr created the initial SAS statistical software at North Carolina State University in the 1960s. James Goodnight and John Sall later joined to commercialize it and co-founded SAS Institute. All four names listed are actual SAS founders/contributors.
