Soil

Loamy soil is a balanced mixture of sand, silt and clay particles, making it ideal for plant growth. It contains high organic matter content in the form of humus, which improves soil structure, water retention and nutrient availability. Sandy soil drains too quickly and has low organic content, while clayey soil is too dense and poorly aerated.

Sandy soil consists of large particles that feel gritty when rubbed between fingers. Due to low organic content and large particle size, it appears pale brown, yellowish or light gray in color. Clayey soil feels smooth and is darker in color, while loamy soil is darker due to higher organic matter content.

Soil is divided into horizontal layers called horizons, including O, A, B and C horizons above the bedrock. The R-horizon represents the underlying bedrock from which soil is formed through weathering processes. It consists of unweathered parent rock material and lies below all soil horizons.

Plants are biotic (living) components that significantly affect soil fertility through root growth, leaf litter decomposition and organic matter addition. Biotic components include all living organisms like plants, animals and microorganisms, whereas pH and air content are abiotic factors. Fertilizers are human-added substances, not natural biotic components.

Plants are primary producers that create organic matter through photosynthesis rather than decomposing it. Decomposers like fungi, bacteria and earthworms break down dead organic material into simpler substances and recycle nutrients back into the soil. These organisms are essential for maintaining soil fertility and ecosystem balance.

Peat is acidic in nature and can effectively neutralize alkaline soils by lowering their pH levels. It contains organic matter that improves soil structure while reducing excessive alkalinity. Lime and calcium carbonate are used to treat acidic soils as they increase pH, while water alone does not change soil chemistry significantly.

Percolation refers to the downward movement of water through soil under the force of gravity. This process determines how quickly water drains through soil and affects water availability to plant roots. Absorption refers to water uptake by plant roots, moisture is static water content, and osmosis is cellular water movement across membranes.

Neutral soil (pH around 7) is generally considered ideal for most plants as it allows optimal nutrient availability. Most crops grow best in neutral conditions where essential nutrients are readily soluble and accessible to roots. Highly acidic or alkaline soils can lock up nutrients, making them unavailable to plants regardless of vegetation type.

When soil has very high absorption capacity, water gets tightly held in small soil pores through capillary forces. This strongly bound water becomes less available for plant roots to extract, creating a situation where greater absorption can reduce the water that plants can actually use. Poor percolation soils waterlog and hold water too long, while percolation rate affects drainage efficiency.

Soil forms the uppermost layer of the Earth's crust, typically ranging from a few centimeters to several meters deep. It is the layer where biological activity, organic matter accumulation and weathering processes are most active. The deeper layers consist of consolidated rock materials without the organic complexity that characterizes soil.

Topsoil (A-horizon) is the most fertile layer due to high concentration of organic matter, humus, nutrients and biological activity. This layer contains decomposed organic material, minerals and supports maximum root growth. Subsoil has fewer nutrients and organic content, while bedrock and parent rock are largely unweathered mineral layers without significant fertility.

Deforestation removes tree cover that protects soil from erosion, overgrazing destroys vegetation that holds soil together, and floods wash away exposed topsoil. These are all major causes of soil erosion. Composting is a soil conservation practice that adds organic matter and improves soil structure without removing or displacing soil particles.

Sandy soil has large particles with high permeability and large pore spaces, causing water to drain rapidly through it. This poor water and nutrient retention capacity is its primary disadvantage for agricultural use, as plants cannot access water when they need it.

Excessive fertilizer use does not physically prevent soil from being washed or blown away. Afforestation creates root networks that hold soil, terrace farming reduces water runoff speed, and embankments physically block soil movement; these are proven erosion control methods.

Topsoil is the uppermost soil layer (A-horizon) richest in organic matter and humus from decomposed plant/animal material. It is biologically active, contains most living organisms, is most fertile, and is softer and less compact than subsoil layers below.

Loamy soil is an optimal mixture of sand, silt, and clay (roughly 40-40-20%) that balances drainage and water retention. It holds adequate nutrients, has good structure for root growth, and is easy to work with, making it ideal for most plants.

Soil erosion is the detachment and removal of topsoil by natural forces like water (rain, rivers) or wind. This process strips away the fertile surface layer, reducing agricultural productivity and carrying sediment to waterways where it causes pollution.

Sandy soil particles are light and loose enough to be easily transported by wind. This aeolian transport creates sand dunes in deserts and can deposit fine sand particles as loess in downwind areas. Larger soil particles resist wind movement.

Clay has the smallest particle size of all soil types, with particles less than 0.002mm in diameter. Particle size increases in the order: clay (<0.002mm) < silt (0.002-0.05mm) < sand (0.05-2mm) < gravel (>2mm). This gives clay its smooth texture when wet.
