Nutrition

Nutrition involves processes that provide nutrients to the body: ingestion (taking in food), digestion (breaking down food), absorption (taking nutrients into blood), and assimilation (using nutrients). Excretion removes waste products and is not part of the nutrition process.

The liver produces bile, small intestine produces intestinal enzymes, and stomach produces gastric juices. The oesophagus is a muscular tube that only transports food via peristalsis - it does not secrete any digestive juices.

While digestion begins in the mouth and continues in the stomach, most enzymatic breakdown completes in the small intestine where pancreatic enzymes and intestinal juices finish breaking down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

The alimentary canal anatomically ends at the anus, but the rectum is the final storage chamber before elimination. The colon precedes the rectum, while the small intestine connects to the large intestine at the caecum.

Tooth enamel, composed mainly of hydroxyapatite, has a mineral content of 96% and ranks 5 on the Mohs scale, making it harder than bone (which contains more collagen and organic material), hair, and nails.

During photosynthesis, plants use energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. This is the oxygen we breathe.

Mastication is the scientific term for chewing - the mechanical breakdown of food by teeth. It increases surface area for enzymes to act, unlike ingestion (taking in), secretion (producing juices), or assimilation (absorbing nutrients).

Canines are the sharp, pointed teeth located between incisors and premolars, designed for tearing and gripping food. Incisors are for cutting, premolars and molars are for grinding.

Chlorophyll is the primary pigment in photosynthesis that absorbs light energy (mainly blue and red wavelengths). Carotene and xanthophyll are accessory pigments, while haemoglobin transports oxygen in blood.

Macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are required by plants in large quantities for growth and development. Micronutrients like iron and zinc are needed in smaller amounts, while "essential" and "prepared" aren't quantity-based categories.

Stomata are tiny pores primarily located on the undersides of leaves that allow gas exchange. Plants convert glucose produced during photosynthesis into starch for storage in leaves. Starch is insoluble and compact, making it ideal for storage without affecting osmotic pressure. Glucose and fructose are simple sugars used directly for energy or transport.

The rumen is the first and largest chamber of a cow's stomach where microbial fermentation of cellulose begins. Partially digested food is regurgitated as cud for further chewing. The oesophagus transports food, liver produces bile, and small intestine absorbs nutrients.

Ruminants like cows, sheep, and deer have a specialized four-chambered stomach that allows them to digest plant material in two steps: initial swallowing and fermentation, followed by regurgitation and re-chewing of cud. This breaks down cellulose more thoroughly.

Nepenthes (pitcher plants) are insectivorous plants that trap and digest insects to supplement their nitrogen requirements. They are not parasites (which harm hosts), saprophytes (which feed on dead matter), or algae (which are photosynthetic protists).

Guard cells are specialized cells that surround each stoma and control its opening and closing by changing shape. Epidermal cells form the outer layer, chloroplasts contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis, and subsidiary cells may support guard cells but don't directly control stomata.

Lichens represent a mutualistic symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae/cyanobacteria. The fungus provides structure and moisture retention while the photosynthetic partner produces food. Parasitism harms one partner, commensalism benefits only one, and lichens clearly demonstrate mutualism.

Insectivorous plants grow in nitrogen-poor soils and trap insects primarily to obtain nitrogen, which is essential for protein synthesis and growth. They already produce their own glucose through photosynthesis and obtain oxygen from the air, so insects supplement mineral nutrients.

Pitcher plants are insectivorous plants that trap insects in modified leaf structures. Cuscuta (dodder) is a parasitic plant that steals nutrients from host plants. Mushrooms are saprophytic fungi, and dodder (mentioned twice as both Cuscuta and Dodder) is parasitic, not insectivorous.

Water is the only substance that appears in both photosynthesis (as a reactant) and respiration (as a product). In photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O → glucose + 6O2. In respiration: glucose + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O. Oxygen is only produced in photosynthesis, CO2 only in respiration.

Fats are broken down during digestion into glycerol and fatty acids. Glycerol is the backbone of fat molecules. Proteins digest into amino acids, and carbohydrates like starch break down into simple sugars like glucose or fructose.

Bile is produced by the liver, not the pancreas. All other pairings are correct: pepsin is the main enzyme in gastric juice, hydrochloric acid is secreted by stomach lining, and ptyalin (salivary amylase) is found in saliva.
