Indian History: Ancient to Medieval Periods

The Paleolithic period (Old Stone Age) was characterized by a hunter-gatherer economy. Early humans had not developed agriculture or animal domestication - those came in the Neolithic revolution. Hunting wild animals and gathering wild plants, fruits, and nuts was the primary means of subsistence. Fishing was practiced but was not the main occupation. Making statues came much later in human civilization.

The Saka era began in 78 AD with the accession of Kanishka, the great Kushan ruler. This calendar system was widely used in ancient India and continues in some contexts today. Ashoka (3rd century BC) and Chandragupta II (4th century AD) lived in different periods. Harsha came much later (7th century AD). Kanishka's reign marked the beginning of this important chronological marker in Indian history.

The Brahmanas are Vedic texts that primarily explain and elaborate on ritual procedures. They provide detailed instructions for performing Vedic sacrifices (yajnas), the symbolism behind rituals, and the priestly duties involved. They are not concerned with bhakti theory (devotion), yoga practices, or meditation techniques - those concepts gained prominence in later Hindu philosophy. The Brahmanas bridge the Vedic hymns (Samhitas) and the philosophical Upanishads.

Lothal is the Harappan site most famously associated with early rice cultivation. Archaeological evidence including rice husks and grains has been found at Lothal, located in Gujarat. Kalibangan is known for fire altars and ploughed fields, but not specifically rice. Harappa gave the civilization its name but is not the primary rice site. Kot Diji is a pre-Harappan site in Sindh, Pakistan. Lothal's location in Gujarat made it suitable for rice cultivation due to proximity to water sources.

The earliest human statues worshipped in India were images of the Buddha. This practice began during the Kushan period (1st-2nd century AD) under the influence of Greco-Buddhist art from Gandhara. Prior to this, Hinduism was aniconic - worship focused on abstract symbols rather than human forms. Statues of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva came later, around the Gupta period (4th-6th century AD). Buddha images represent the first anthropomorphic worship in India.

The Maurya dynasty (322-185 BC) is the oldest among the options listed. Founded by Chandragupta Maurya, it preceded the Kushan dynasty (1st-3rd century AD), the Gupta dynasty (4th-6th century AD), and the Kanva dynasty (1st century BC). The Mauryan Empire was India's first great empire, reaching its peak under Ashoka. Chronologically: Maurya → Kanva → Kushan → Gupta.

Traditionally, there were three main Vedas - Rigveda, Samaveda, and Yajurveda. Atharvaveda was added later as the fourth Veda, making it the odd one out when only three Vedas are being considered.

The Indo-Greek or Bactrian kings were the first rulers to issue coins bearing their names and portraits. This practice began around the 2nd century BCE. The Mauryas issued coins but did not typically bear the ruler's name, while Scythians and Kushans adopted this practice later.

Mathura was a major center of Brahmanical religion and art from ancient times. The region has numerous archaeological finds of Brahmanical deities like Vishnu, Shiva, and various mother goddesses. Sarnath is primarily Buddhist, Nagarjunakonda has both Buddhist and Hindu remains, while Banaras though important religiously is less known for archaeological finds of idols.

Chandragupta Maurya defeated Seleucus Nicator (Seleucus I) around 305-303 BCE. After this defeat, Seleucus ceded territories of Afghanistan, Baluchistan, and eastern Persia to Chandragupta, and received 500 war elephants in return. Alexander died years before Chandragupta's rise, and Porus was defeated by Alexander, not Chandragupta.

In Vedic texts, vrihi, tandula, and sali all refer to different varieties of rice. These terms appear in various Sanskrit texts describing agricultural produce. Wheat is typically called godhuma, barley is yava, and gram is called mudga or chanaka in Vedic literature.

Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan, known as Rahim, was one of the nine gems (Navaratnas) in Akbar's court and a renowned poet. Birbal was also a courtier but primarily known for his wit and wisdom. Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas but lived later. Bairam Khan was Akbar's guardian and regent, not primarily known as a poet.

The Iqtadari system (also called Iqta system) was introduced by Iltutmish in the Delhi Sultanate. Under this system, land revenues from assigned territories were given to officials in lieu of salaries. Balban consolidated it, Aibak was the first Sultan, and Alauddin Khilji later reformed the system significantly.

Hampi (also called Vijayanagar) was the capital city of the Vijayanagar Empire. The extensive ruins at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contain the remains of this powerful empire. Golconda was a separate Deccani sultanate. Binaural appears to be a typo. Baroda (Vadodara) was ruled by the Gaekwads, a Maratha princely state.

Bijak is the most famous work of the saint-poet Kabir, written in Hindi and containing his verses (dohas, padas, and sakhis). It expresses his Nirguna philosophy and critique of ritualism. Surdas wrote Sur Sagar, Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas, and Ravidas was also a Bhakti saint but Bijak is specifically Kabir's work.

Bana Bhatta was the court poet of Harshvardhana (Harsha) in the 7th century CE. He wrote the Harshacharita (biography of Harsha) and Kadambari. Pulakesin II was a Chalukya ruler. Samudragupta was a Gupta emperor. Tashovarman (possibly Harsha's contemporary) ruled Kanauj, but Bana served Harsha at Thanesar and later Kanauj.

The earliest coins in India were punch-marked coins that first appeared in the Magadha region (modern-day Bihar) and Eastern Uttar Pradesh during the 6th century BCE. These coins were made of silver and copper and were used for trade and commerce. Central India, Western India, and South India developed coinage later.

The word Buddha comes from the Sanskrit root 'budh' meaning 'to awaken' or 'to understand'. Buddha literally means 'the awakened one' or 'the enlightened one' - someone who has attained enlightenment and is free from ignorance. It refers to Siddhartha Gautama's state of awakening.
