Exoplanet Characteristics

Gas giants, like Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system, are the most common type of exoplanet discovered. They are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium and are typically much larger and more massive than Earth.

51 Pegasi b, discovered in 1995, was the first exoplanet found orbiting a Sun-like star. It is a hot Jupiter, meaning it is a gas giant that orbits very close to its host star, completing an orbit in just 4.2 days.

Goldilocks Zone Planets are exoplanets that orbit their host stars at a distance that allows for liquid water to exist on their surfaces. This zone is named after the fairy tale character Goldilocks, who preferred things that were 'just right'.
