Sand removal tanks are designed to trap heavy, settleable inorganic solids through sedimentation. Pebbles and sand particles settle to the bottom due to their weight, while lighter materials like oils, grease, and organic debris remain suspended or float for later removal stages.

Sludge is the semi-solid material that accumulates during wastewater treatment, consisting of settled solids, organic matter, and microorganisms. It contains the heavy solid waste materials removed from the wastewater and is often further processed for disposal or beneficial use.

Clarified water has had settleable solids removed through primary treatment, but plastics and oil would not remain - plastics float or are screened out early, and oils/greases are skimmed off. Clarified water still contains dissolved contaminants like soap, food waste particles, and some organic matter.

During wastewater treatment, sludge is processed and can be used as nutrient-rich manure or fertilizer due to its organic content and beneficial microorganisms. The sludge undergoes stabilization to reduce pathogens and is then safely applied to agricultural land as a soil amendment.

Aerobic bacteria require oxygen and consume organic matter during wastewater treatment. Human excreta is rich in organic material that serves as a food source for these bacteria, which break it down as part of the biological treatment process. Inorganic materials like cans, paints, and oils are not consumed by aerobic bacteria.

Sewerage is not the destination of treated water.

Water is removed from activated sludge using sand drying beds, where the sludge is spread and allowed to dry through evaporation and percolation. This method effectively reduces water content through natural processes. Skimmers remove floating materials, aerators add oxygen, and sand removal tanks are earlier in the treatment process.

Cooking oils and fats harden when cooled and can accumulate in pipes, causing stubborn blockages and backups in the drainage system. Unlike liquids that remain fluid, these fats solidify and adhere to pipe walls, trapping other debris and creating serious plumbing problems that are difficult and expensive to clear.

Untreated human excreta contains pathogens, organic matter, and nutrients that contaminate both soil (through surface application or leakage) and water bodies (through runoff or direct discharge). This contamination spreads waterborne diseases, degrades ecosystems, and makes water unsafe for human use, affecting both environmental compartments.

In vermicomposting toilets (not 'vermin processing'), human excreta is converted into nutrient-rich vermicompost through the action of earthworms. The earthworms break down the organic matter, producing a safe, odorless material that can be used as fertilizer. The process uses natural biological decomposition rather than chemical or energy-intensive treatment.
