India introduced ballot papers for the first time in the 1962 General Election. Before this, elections were conducted using other methods. The 1962 election marked a significant step in standardizing the electoral process with official printed ballot papers across the country.

Samachar Darpan, published in Bengali language in 1818, was India's first vernacular newspaper. It was launched from Serampore, Bengal by missionaries to communicate with local populations. This marked the beginning of regional language journalism in India.

Satyajit Ray is widely recognized as the Indian film director with the maximum number of international awards. His film 'Pather Panchali' won the inaugural 'Best Human Document' award at Cannes in 1956, and he received numerous international honors including Lifetime Achievement awards from Cannes, Venice, and other prestigious film festivals.

CK Nayudu was the captain of India's first Test cricket team in 1932 against England. He led the team in India's inaugural Test match at Lord's. Lala Amarnath, IAK Pataudi, and Gulam Ahmed were all notable cricketers but not the first captain.

The Chamar community is India's largest Scheduled Caste community, comprising approximately 12-14% of the total SC population. They are primarily concentrated in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. Other communities listed (Adi Dravid, Pariah, Madiga) are significant SC groups but smaller in population.

Kanchenjunga (8,586m) is the highest Himalayan peak within Indian territory, located in Sikkim on the border with Nepal. While Mount Everest (8,848m) is the world's highest peak, it lies on the Nepal-China border. Nanga Parbat and Nanda Devi are significant peaks but Kanchenjunga holds the distinction of being India's highest.

The Press Trust of India (PTI), India's first news agency, was established in 1947 soon after independence. It was created to provide an independent news gathering service for Indian newspapers, replacing the British-dominated Associated Press of India. PTI began operations on August 27, 1947.

Mumbai Samachar (formerly Bombay Samachar), established in 1822, is the oldest existing daily newspaper in India. It has been published continuously for nearly 200 years, initially in Gujarati and still operating today. Other papers like The Hindu were founded later (1878).

Bhanu Athaiya became the first Indian to win an Oscar in 1983 for Best Costume Design for the film 'Gandhi'. She was recognized at the 55th Academy Awards. While other Indians like Satyajit Ray received honorary Oscars, Athaiya was the first to win a competitive Academy Award.

Justice Nagendra Singh served as President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 1985-1988, becoming the first Indian to hold this position. A distinguished jurist and diplomat, he represented India at the UN before being elected to the ICJ. Others listed were Indian Chief Justices but not ICJ Presidents.

Marina Beach in Chennai is the longest beach in India, stretching approximately 13 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal. It is a natural urban beach and a major tourist attraction. Juhu Beach in Mumbai is famous but shorter, while Kovalam and Chorwad are smaller beach destinations.

Hindustan Motors, established in 1942, was indeed the first car manufacturing company in India. It produced the iconic Ambassador car. Premier Automobiles (1944), TELCO (1945), and Standard Motor Products (1950) started later, making Hindustan Motors the correct answer.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were first used in India in 1999 for selected constituencies in certain state elections. Their full-scale nationwide implementation came later. The 1999 introduction marked India's transition to electronic voting.

Goa is the only Indian state where a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is applicable, inherited from the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867. This governs matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance for all residents regardless of religion. Other states follow religion-specific personal laws.

Malayala Manorama, published in Malayalam, is India's largest-selling weekly magazine by circulation. It has held this position consistently for decades. While India Today (Hindi) has significant readership, Manorama's weekly circulation numbers are the highest among regional language publications.

Lakshadweep has the highest percentage of Muslims in India at approximately 96.6% (2011 Census), being a union territory with an overwhelmingly Muslim population. Jammu & Kashmir has a significant Muslim population but not the highest percentage. Kerala and Chandigarh have much lower Muslim percentages.

Andhra Pradesh Open University (now Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University), established in 1982, was India's first open university to start functioning. While IGNOU (1985) is more famous today, Andhra Pradesh Open University preceded it by three years. Annamalai University and Karnataka University are traditional universities.

The Great Famine of 1876-1878 (also known as the Southern India Famine) was the worst in colonial India's history, affecting approximately 59 million people across Madras, Bombay, Mysore, and Hyderabad. It resulted in 5-8 million deaths. Other periods listed had severe famines, but none matched the scale and mortality of 1876-78.

R. Venkataraman was 76 years old when he assumed office as President in 1987, making him the oldest person to do so. He served until 1992. V.V. Giri was 74, Giani Zail Singh was 68, and Dr. S.D. Sharma was 73 when they became President.

Santosh Yadav was the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest twice, achieving this feat in 1992 and 1993. Bachendri Pal was the first Indian woman to climb Everest (1984) but only once. Kalpana Chawla was an astronaut, not a mountaineer. Arti Saha was a pioneering swimmer.

K.R. Narayanan was the first Indian President to cast his vote while in office during the 1998 General Election. Before him, Presidents followed the convention of not voting to maintain neutrality. This was a symbolic act emphasizing the President's role as a citizen and constitutional head.

Morarji Desai was 81 years old when he became Prime Minister in 1977, making him the oldest person to assume that office. He led the Janata Party government. Jawaharlal Nehru was 58 when he became PM, Lal Bahadur Shastri was 60, and P.V. Narasimha Rao was 70.

Star TV Network introduced five major television channels into the Indian broadcasting space that had so far been monopolised by the Indian government-owned Doordarshan: MTV, STAR Plus, Star Movies, BBC, Prime Sports and STAR Chinese Channel. Soon after, India saw the launch of Zee TV, the first privately owned Indian channel to broadcast over cable followed by Asia Television Network (ATN).

Chartered Bank (now Standard Chartered) was the first foreign bank to open a branch in India in 1858 in Kolkata (then Calcutta), making it the correct answer. Citi Bank entered India much later (1902 in Calcutta), American Express in the 20th century, and ANZ Grindlays was also a later entrant.
