The Trial Chamber

The Trial Chamber is responsible for conducting trials and delivering judgments in cases involving individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. It is composed of three judges who are elected by the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.

The Presiding Judge of a Trial Chamber is responsible for overseeing the trial and ensuring that it is conducted in a fair and impartial manner. The Presiding Judge also delivers the judgment of the Trial Chamber and rules on motions and objections raised by the parties during the trial.

The standard of proof required for a conviction in a Trial Chamber of the ICC is beyond a reasonable doubt. This is the highest standard of proof in criminal law and it means that the prosecution must prove the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable doubt.

The possible outcomes of a trial in a Trial Chamber of the ICC include conviction and sentence, acquittal, and mistrial. A conviction can result in a sentence of imprisonment, a fine, or both. An acquittal means that the accused is found not guilty of the charges against them. A mistrial occurs when the trial cannot be completed for some reason, such as the death of a judge or a juror.

Both the convicted person and the Prosecutor have the right to appeal the judgment of a Trial Chamber of the ICC to the Appeals Chamber of the ICC. The Appeals Chamber can uphold, overturn, or amend the judgment of the Trial Chamber.

The Victims' Participation and Reparation Section (VPRS) of the ICC provides support and assistance to victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC, represents the interests of victims in the proceedings before the ICC, and monitors the implementation of reparations orders issued by the ICC.

The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the ICC is responsible for investigating and prosecuting individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The OTP is headed by the Prosecutor, who is elected by the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.

The Registry of the ICC provides administrative and logistical support to the Court, manages the Court's budget and finances, and translates and interprets documents and proceedings of the Court.

The Assembly of States Parties (ASP) of the ICC oversees the administration of the ICC, elects the judges and the Prosecutor of the ICC, and adopts the budget of the ICC.

The Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) of the ICC provides financial assistance to victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC, supports projects and initiatives aimed at assisting victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC, and promotes the rights of victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Interpol assists the ICC in apprehending and transferring suspects to the Court, provides training and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies in countries that are party to the Rome Statute, and maintains a database of information on fugitives wanted by the ICC.

The UNSC can refer situations to the ICC for investigation and prosecution, impose sanctions on countries that are not cooperating with the ICC, and provide financial support to the ICC.

The ICRC provides humanitarian assistance to victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC, monitors the conditions of detention of suspects and detainees in the custody of the ICC, and provides training and technical assistance to the ICC on issues related to international humanitarian law.

The IFRC provides humanitarian assistance to victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC, supports the work of the ICRC in relation to the ICC, and promotes the rights of victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the ICC.
