Suspensions

A suspension is a chord that contains a note that is held over from the previous chord. This note is usually dissonant with the other notes in the chord, but it is resolved to a consonant note in the next chord.

The three types of suspensions are 4-3, 6-5, and 7-6. A 4-3 suspension is a suspension in which the suspended note is a fourth above the root of the chord. A 6-5 suspension is a suspension in which the suspended note is a sixth above the root of the chord. A 7-6 suspension is a suspension in which the suspended note is a seventh above the root of the chord.

A suspension is resolved when it is moved to a different note in the next chord. This note is usually consonant with the other notes in the chord.

The main difference between a suspension and an appoggiatura is that a suspension is held over from the previous chord, while an appoggiatura is played before the rest of the chord.

The most common type of suspension is the 4-3 suspension. This is because the fourth is a relatively dissonant interval, and it is easy to resolve to a consonant interval.

Suspensions can be used in any key. However, they are more common in some keys than others. For example, 4-3 suspensions are more common in major keys, while 6-5 suspensions are more common in minor keys.

A prepared suspension is a suspension that is preceded by a note that is the same as the suspended note. This helps to make the suspension sound less dissonant.

An unprepared suspension is a suspension that is not preceded by a note that is the same as the suspended note. This makes the suspension sound more dissonant.

A delayed suspension is a suspension that is played after the rest of the chord. This makes the suspension sound more dissonant.

A free suspension is a suspension that is not resolved to a consonant note. This makes the suspension sound very dissonant.

A pedal suspension is a suspension that is held over for more than one chord. This makes the suspension sound very dissonant.
