Cell: The unit of life

Cell is the structural and functional unit of a living organism.

The living bodies, which are almost the same in both plant and animal cells are termed as organelles. Centrosome is found only in animal cells. Hence, it is not called as organelle.

It is centromere, which initiates and regulates the process of cell division.

Teh cell wall remains present only in plant celsl. It is totally absent in animals.

Mitochondria is known as the power house of the cell. It is a seat of aerobic respiration.

Bacteria is known as a prokaryotic cell in which the nuclear membrane remains absent.

Plastid is a living part of a cell.

They are colourless plastids. They do not have pigments. They only store starch in the plant cell.

Volvox is a multicellular organism.

Endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the cell membrane on the outside and the nuclear membrane on the inside. It is the supportive framework of a cell.

Virus is a non-cellular organism. It does not show any characteristic of life until it enters a living body.

Red blood cells are circular and biconcave for easy passage through blood capillaries.

Nerve cells are the longest cells in nature.

Lysosomes are known as suicidal bags. They digest cartilages during the formation of bones.

They store water and other substances like food, pigments and waste products. They provide turgidity to the plant cell.
