The cmp command in UNIX performs a byte-by-byte comparison of two files and reports the first differing byte and line number. Unlike 'diff' which shows line-by-line differences, cmp gives a binary-style comparison. The 'compare' command doesn't exist in standard UNIX, and 'test' is for conditional expressions.

The Operating System (OS) acts as the fundamental interface between users and computer hardware, managing resources and providing services. Compilers translate code, hardware is the physical machinery, and JCL is a job control language for batch systems - none of these directly serve as the user-computer interface like the OS does.

The cp (copy) command in UNIX copies files and directories. The options listed as 'cpy' and 'cmp' don't exist as standard commands. Cp can copy single files, multiple files to a directory, or recursively copy entire directory structures with the -r flag.

The chmod (change mode) command modifies file access permissions (read, write, execute) for owner, group, and others in UNIX. Permissions can be set symbolically (u+x, go-r) or numerically (755, 644). The other options (per, mod) are not standard UNIX commands.

The passwd command allows users to change their password in UNIX. It prompts for the old password (for verification) and then the new password twice. The 'pwd' command (print working directory) shows the current directory path - it's unrelated to password changes. 'Password' is not a standard command.

The rm (remove) command can delete directories when used with the -r (recursive) or -rf (recursive, force) flags. For removing empty directories specifically, rmdir exists but is less commonly used. The commands 'rd' and 'remove' are not standard UNIX utilities. Rm is the versatile choice for directory removal.

mkdir (make directory) is the standard UNIX/Linux command for creating new directories. The other options are invalid: md is a Windows/DOS command, make is a build automation tool, and there is a valid correct option.

banner is a UNIX command that displays text in large letters on screen. The other options are incorrect: cal displays calendar, and msg is not a standard UNIX display command. However, banner is not included in all UNIX distributions.

Multiprocessing refers to systems that use multiple processors or processor cores to execute tasks. Multiprogramming refers to running multiple programs on a single processor, time-sharing divides processor time among users, and MS-DOS is a single-user single-tasking OS.

In batch processing systems, instructions to the OS are written using Job Control Language (JCL). The term 'job of control' appears to be a truncated or OCR-damaged version of 'job control'. JCL is the standard mechanism for specifying batch job requirements in mainframe and batch systems.

Batch processing systems collect jobs together and execute them sequentially without user interaction. This is in contrast to online systems (interactive), real-time systems (time-critical), or time-sharing systems (simultaneous user access). The defining characteristic is the collect-then-execute workflow.

Ken Thompson created UNIX in 1969 at Bell Labs. Dennis Ritchie co-developed it and created C, but Thompson is credited as the primary creator. Bill Gates founded Microsoft and had nothing to do with UNIX.
