Anatomy of the Ear

The tympanic membrane, also known as the eardrum, is part of the middle ear, not the outer ear.

The pinna is the visible part of the ear and its primary function is to collect sound waves and direct them into the external auditory canal.

Tinnitus is a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ears that is not caused by an external source. It is a symptom of hearing loss, but not a type of hearing loss itself.

Earwax buildup is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss. It can block the external auditory canal and prevent sound waves from reaching the eardrum.
