The History of Submarines

Cornelius Drebbel, a Dutch inventor, built the first working submarine in 1620. His submarine, powered by oars, was able to submerge for a short period of time.

The H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine, successfully sank the USS Housatonic in 1864, becoming the first submarine to sink an enemy ship.

The United States developed the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, in 1954. The Nautilus was able to travel underwater for extended periods of time without surfacing, revolutionizing submarine warfare.
