A process is a structured set of activities designed to accomplish a specific objective. Key characteristics include delivering specific results, being measurable, and responding to specific events. Organizational structure is a separate concern from process design.

NAS (Network Attached Storage) is specifically designed for file-level storage and sharing over a network. SAN offers block-level storage better suited for databases, while DAS directly attaches to a single server without network sharing capabilities.

All these characteristics make DAS inflexible for growing environments.

SAN (Storage Area Network) provides the fastest data movement between server and storage because it uses dedicated, high-speed network infrastructure like Fibre Channel (up to 32Gbps or more). DAS is limited by server bus bandwidth, while NAS has protocol overhead and shared network contention. SAN's dedicated path and block-level access optimize for speed.

Tape libraries connect to SANs because tape drives require Fibre Channel connectivity for backup and archival workflows in enterprise environments. NAS uses file-level protocols (NFS/SMB) inappropriate for tape, while DAS lacks the network architecture. SAN provides the necessary fabric for integrating tape into the storage infrastructure.

SAN is the preferred storage for databases because it provides high-speed, low-latency, block-level access that databases require. NAS adds file-layer overhead and latency, while DAS lacks scalability and sharing capabilities. Database workloads need consistent, fast I/O with multiple server access - SAN's dedicated infrastructure delivers this optimally.

In Fibre Channel SANs, a Zone is a logical path configuration that controls which servers can communicate with which storage devices through the switch. Zoning creates isolated paths for security and traffic management. It's not a storage partition or grouping of elements - it's about access control through the switch fabric.

WWN stands for World Wide Number, a unique 64-bit identifier assigned to Fibre Channel devices (like HBAs and storage ports). It's similar to a MAC address but for storage networks. Every device in a Fibre Channel fabric has a WWN for identification and zoning purposes.

CIFS stands for Common Internet File System, a network file sharing protocol developed by Microsoft. It allows applications to access and share files over a network, essentially extending the local file system access to remote servers.
